Coconut flooring vs strand woven bamboo flooring

Both coconut flooring and strand woven bamboo flooring are ideal alternatives to hardwood flooring because they are strong, hard, long lasting and have a beautiful natural look.

Both coconuts and bamboo reach maturity as plants in only 5 to 7 years. The difference between them is that bamboo is normally harvested as soon as it reaches maturity whereas coconut palms are nut cut and harvested for their timber until they are 60 or 70 years old and have stopped producing any more coconuts. The timber from older coconut palms is much harder and more suitable for flooring.

Here is the first point of difference. Strand woven bamboo flooring has a Janka Hardness of 2,500 pounds force whereas coconut flooring typically has a Janka Hardness of about 1,600 pounds. Although strand woven bamboo flooring is much harder than coconut flooring both flooring types are more than hard enough to stand up to high traffic and heavy furniture.

Both types of flooring has a lighter color with a gentle grain; and both are available in darker ‘carbonized’ colors.

The origins of the flooring types are different. Most strand woven bamboo flooring is made in the Zhujiang delta of Guandong Province. Although some manufacturers of strand woven bamboo flooring have recently let in the FSC to certifiable the bamboo forests as sustainable, there are no fair trade agreements to protect local farmers. Generally speaking, a lot of environmental oversight is missing in China.

The main producers of coconuts in the world are the Philippines, India, Brazil and Indonesia. It is hard to believe environmental oversight is any better in a lot of these places. However, many coconut farmers live in remote areas and on islands where coconuts and tourism are the biggest suppliers of income. Coconut trees are less likely to be clear cut because they represent income and secondly only senile palms have value as flooring material.

Finally, coconut flooring and strand woven bamboo flooring are both allergen free flooring types because they are easy to keep free of dust mites. Strand woven bamboo flooring has the added advantage of being anti-fungal and anti-microbial as well.

Strand woven bamboo flooring is more popular than coconut flooring at the moment. There are only a few suppliers of coconut flooring, but that is sure to change as more people discover the beauty, strength and reasonable price of coconut flooring.
